- Takes case to court
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has dragged the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to court over its plan to raise salaries for political office holders.
According to a professional report by Eko Hot Blog, the rights group is asking the court to stop the proposed adjustment, describing it as unfair to ordinary Nigerians already battling economic hardship. SERAP argued that public resources should not be diverted to benefit political elites when millions of citizens are suffering from poverty, inflation, and unemployment.

In its suit, the organization stressed that the proposed increment would further disconnect political leaders from the realities facing citizens. It urged the commission to channel resources into sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure rather than focusing on personal benefits for politicians.

SERAP also emphasized that the move contradicts Nigeria’s constitutional principles of equality and prudent use of public funds. It therefore wants the judiciary to issue an order preventing RMAFC from implementing the pay rise until the case is resolved.
The group’s position underscores a broader call for accountability in governance, noting that leaders should share in the sacrifices they often demand from the people during times of crisis.
Many observers believe the court’s ruling on this matter will shape public confidence in governance and set a precedent for future decisions about public officers’ pay. It also raises an important debate about leadership priorities at a time when Nigeria is grappling with inflation, insecurity, and widespread poverty.
