Tinubu To Miss 79th United Nations General Assembly – See Why

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which is set to take place in September 2024.

The 79th UNGA will officially begin on September 10, 2024, with the general debate scheduled from Tuesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 28, and concluding on Monday, September 30, 2024.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that significant events during this session include the “Summit of the Future” on September 22-23, and various high-level plenary meetings, such as discussions on the existential threats posed by sea-level rise (September 25), the commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (September 26), and a meeting focused on antimicrobial resistance (September 26).

In a statement released on Thursday, the presidency announced that President Tinubu will not attend this year’s UNGA, choosing instead to concentrate on critical domestic matters.

According to Dada Olusegun, the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, the decision was made following Tinubu’s recent trips to China and the United Kingdom, as he aims to address pressing challenges facing the country, particularly in the wake of recent devastating flooding.
