ECI is set to mark its 25th anniversary at its 14th biennial convention in New Jersey from September 18 to 21, 2025.
In his message to the diaspora group, Tinubu hailed the organisation for promoting Lagos’s rich cultural heritage, while sponsoring various impactful programmes for Lagos indigenes at home.
The president, who inspired the founding of ECI during his time in political exile from the government of former Military Head of State Sani Abacha, commended the club’s members for upholding the vision of promoting harmony, fostering good governance, and supporting development across various spheres.

“The President acknowledges ECI’s significant contributions in promoting Lagos’s rich cultural heritage, sponsoring medical outreach programs, providing scholarships to the underprivileged, financing skill acquisition initiatives, and supporting entrepreneurship,” the statement reads in part.
“As Eko Club International celebrates 25 years of remarkable growth with 25 active chapters across the USA, UK, Canada, and Europe, President Tinubu affirms that the organisation’s unique history and impactful activities have positioned it for enduring generational influence.”
As ECI leaders and members prepare to celebrate 25 years of making impact in their communities abroad and at home, the president urged them to reflect on past achievements and prepare for even greater contributions in the future.
“The President thanks the members for their steadfast support and wishes the organisation continued success and greater impact in the years ahead,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, ECI President, Chief Saheed Olushi, has said the silver jubilee anniversary celebration will help the organisation reflect on the considerable impact it has made over the past 25 years.
“Our 25th anniversary is more than a celebration – it is a testament to the power of unity and shared purpose,” Chief Olushi said. “We have grown from a vision shared by a few passionate Lagosians into an international network making real, measurable impact at home and abroad.”

ECI was founded in 2000 at the behest of President Tinubu after he had encouraged Lagosians in the diaspora to unite under a common platform. The club has since grown into the premier global organisation of Lagos indigenes.
Through steady and visionary leadership, in particular, the contributions of Founding Presidents, Alhaji Olusesi Dawodu (late), Attorney O.J. Lawal, Otunba T.J. Abass, and outstanding members Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo (late), Dr. Shaffdeen Amuwo, Dr. Moruf Alausa, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, and the current President, Chief Olushi, the group has grown into an organisation that boasts 25 active chapters across the USA, UK, Canada, and Europe.
