Gunmen who invaded the residence of Nasarawa State Commissioner for Higher Education, Chief Clement Uhembe, in the early hours of Sunday, left anslgiosh and tears in their wake with the killing of Terlumum Hemba, a 400-level student of the Federal University, Lafia.
The sad incident occurred around 1am in the Kaduna Koro area of Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, along the Lafia-Makurdi highway, according to a report by Punch.
Narrating the incident to a oublication known as Northern City News in Lafia, an eyewitness, who identified himself only as Daddy, informed our correspondent that the gunmen terrorised the occupants of the building and shot the microbiology student dead.
He said the gunmen, who he described as cultists, shot Hemba at close range as he attempted to escape and also beat him with sticks till he died.
“The gunmen beat some of the occupants of the house. They demanded to see the commissioner who had travelled with some members of his family to Port Harcourt for his son’s wedding,” the eyewitness, who said he hid in a makeshift shop around, stated.
He further explained that the other victims escaped into a nearby bush as the gunme, who operated for several minutes unhindered, conducted a thorough search of the commissioner’s living room.
Speaking on the incident, Uhembe linked the attack on his political adversaries.
“The issue arose from the victory of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Ihuman ward during the last elections, which the party had never won since its existence, and it angered a lot of people. After the APC won, my life came under threat from some individuals,” he stated.
Also, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Agyaragu division, Mr Biam, who confirmed the attack to our correspondent, said investigation into the incident had commenced while the corpse of the deceased has been deposited in a morgue.
