Whitney Adeniran: Lagos Arraigns Chrisland School Principal, Other Staff Members For Manslaughter

  • Whitney slumped and died at the venue of her school’s sports event on February 9, 2023.

  • The 12-year-old’s autopsy showed that she died from asphyxia and electrocution.

  • The Lagos government subsequently found some officials of the school culpable and decided to charge them with crimes.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Government on Thursday arraigned the Principal, Vice-Principal and two employees of Chrisland School, Opebi, Lagos, over the death of one of the school’s pupils,12-year-old Whitney Adeniran.

The defendants were arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on involuntary manslaughter, reckless and negligent acts preferred against them by the state.

The school’s workers who were arraigned before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja include Ademoye Adewale, Kuku Fatai, Mrs. Belinda Amao, Nwatu Ugochi Victoria and Chrisland School Limited.

While in the dock, the school’s principal, Mrs. Belinda Amao, broke down in tears as the court and counsel tried to agree on a date for the commencement of the trial.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them.

Whitney Adeniran

Whitney died on February 9 during an Inter-House Sports event at Agege Stadium.

Blessing Adeniran, Whitney’s mother, accused Chrisland School of holding back information on the cause of her death.

Consequently, the state ministry of education ordered a temporary closure of the school pending an investigation.

The state later revealed that an autopsy on February 15 showed that the 12-year-old girl died from asphyxia and electrocution.

The Lagos ministry of justice established a case of manslaughter and negligence against the school.
