Labour Party Warns Members Against Violating Constitution, Sets Up Disciplinary Panel

The Labour Party (LP) has established a seven-member Disciplinary Standing Committee to address the conduct of members who fail to adhere to the party’s constitution and directives.

This decision was announced by the party’s National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure, during a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja.

The formation of the committee was one of the resolutions made at a recent National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Abure emphasized the importance of all party members following the rules and respecting the national leadership and the LP constitution. He stated that the national leadership would take disciplinary action against any member who refuses to comply with the party’s constitution and directives.

“All party members are under obligation to respect the integrity and dignity of the party and its leadership. The national leadership will not hesitate to discipline any member who is not ready to obey the Constitution of the Party and follow directives,” Abure said.

The Disciplinary Committee is chaired by the National Legal Adviser, Kehinde Edun, and includes Chief Clement Ojukwu, Deputy National Chairman; Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi; Mrs. Dudu Manuga, National Women Leader; Callistus Ihejiagwa, Chairman of the Imo chapter; Alhaji Raji Mohammed, Chairman of the Kano State chapter; and Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, National Secretary, who serves as the Secretary of the committee.

Abure urged all party members to unite and work towards the party’s goal of uplifting the poor, which is central to the Labour Party’s mission.

He further elaborated on the reason behind the communiqué, explaining that it was issued to outline the NWC’s decisions following a meeting with the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti.

During the meeting, the governor expressed his intention to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday, August 31st, to dissolve the National, State, Local Government, and Ward Executive Councils on the grounds that their tenures had expired, based on an alleged claim by INEC.

Abure clarified that the NWC had taken note of the National Convention held on March 27, 2024, which had been validated by a court ruling on June 16, 2024. The court upheld the convention, addressing issues related to leadership, congresses, and delegate selection, confirming that these were internal matters of the party.

“For anyone to suggest that there is a vacuum in the party’s leadership is not only mischievous but a deliberate attempt to cause panic, chaos, and disrupt the smooth functioning of our party,” Abure said.

He also referenced Section 82(5) of the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates that a political party’s failure to notify the Commission, as required, would render any convention, congress, or meeting invalid. Abure affirmed that the LP had met its obligations to convene its convention.

The national chairman criticized any attempts to claim that the executives’ tenures had expired, labeling such actions as unprofessional and mischievous. He emphasized that official government business is conducted through written communications and called on party members to await any official communication from INEC.

Abure concluded by calling for unity among party members and urged all parties involved in disputes to maintain the status quo until a final court verdict is reached.
