EKO HOT BLOG reports that the arrears are tied to the recently approved N77,000 monthly allowance by the Federal Government, aimed at cushioning the impact of economic hardship on Nigerian youths.
Recall that on April 5, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, assured corps members that both serving and recently discharged members would benefit from the new allowance. Speaking at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, Nafiu stated that once funds were made available, payments would be processed without delay.
“Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details,” Nafiu said.
He further emphasised the government’s commitment to young Nigerians, noting that “Nigerians should not fret about that because the government is both responsible and responsive to their needs.”
The development was confirmed by PUNCH through a previously serving corps member who preferred anonymity. He expressed surprise at the payment, saying, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”
The resumed disbursement covers arrears from July 2024 to March 2025, addressing months of frustration among corps members who had awaited implementation of the allowance increase.
The Federal Government had earlier approved the increment in line with its pledge to review wages and provide financial relief amid rising costs of living across the country.
