A family of three lost their lives in a car accident along the Mabushi Bridge in Abuja on Wednesday, following an altercation between the driver and a group of louts.

Eko Hot Blog gathered that the louts stopped the vehicle for allegedly picking up a relative by the roadside. When the driver refused to pay the “fine” they demanded, the louts forced themselves into the car, dragged the steering wheel, and caused the fatal crash.

The incident sparked outrage among passersby, who pursued the louts. One was lynched and set ablaze, while the other two sustained severe injuries before being rescued by police and taken to hospital.

A different account suggested that five people were inside the vehicle, including two family members and three louts who had entered the car while it was moving.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle collided with a taxi near Mabushi Bridge before veering into a ditch.

The family died instantly, while the others were taken to the National Hospital for treatment.

Police officers from the Mabushi Division later cleared the wreckage. As of press time, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, had not issued an official statement.

Road safety experts note that accidents remain a major concern in Nigeria. Data from the Federal Road Safety Corps shows 5,081 fatalities in 2023, a 21 percent drop from 6,456 recorded in 2022.

Despite this decline, the death toll remains high, underscoring the urgency of stricter enforcement.

The Mabushi axis, which links the Central Business District to Jabi and Wuse, is notorious for traffic gridlock, touting, and occasional violence.

Illegal louts in the area frequently harass motorists and commercial drivers over alleged infractions, often leading to clashes.

Authorities have repeatedly vowed to clamp down on such activities. In July 2024, the FCT Administration and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services announced plans to prosecute offenders.

However, Wednesday’s tragedy has renewed concerns over road safety, tout violence, and the need for effective policing to protect motorists.
