The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, September 8, 2025.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the union’s decision follows a breakdown in talks with industry stakeholders over the introduction of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for fuel distribution across the country.

In a statement jointly signed by NUPENG President, Comrade Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, the union expressed deep concern that the deployment of the CNG trucks could lead to job losses among its members.

The leadership explained that recent recruitment of drivers under different employment terms outside the existing labour framework has raised fears that many of the new drivers may be excluded from joining the union.

“This development violates the spirit of workers’ rights and protections,” the statement said, adding that the move undermines long-standing labour structures within the oil and gas transport sector.

NUPENG noted that multiple meetings with relevant parties failed to resolve the matter, prompting the decision to embark on strike action.

“We are urging the Federal Government, its agencies, and stakeholders in the sector to urgently intervene before this situation escalates,” the union leaders stated.

The union warned that the strike will disrupt the movement and supply of petroleum products nationwide and urged Nigerians to bear with the temporary hardship the industrial action may cause.

“Our aim is to safeguard the rights and job security of our members who have been faithfully serving the nation’s energy needs,” the statement concluded.
