The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has dismissed allegations that its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri Erewa, has been selective in promoting the welfare of Igbo nationals abroad, describing the claims as false and misleading.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur Rahman Balogun, issued a statement on Friday in response to comments by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, who identified himself as Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Isiguzoro alleged that Dabiri Erewa and NIDCOM had neglected the interests of Igbo citizens in the diaspora. The Commission rejected the claims as “spurious and fabricated,” while also questioning Isiguzoro’s authority to speak on behalf of the group.

NIDCOM maintained that it serves Nigerians abroad without ethnic, religious, or political bias.

It cited interventions on behalf of distressed Nigerians in countries such as Libya, Ghana, Mali, Central African Republic, Lebanon, Iraq, South Africa, Canada, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Ukraine.

Supporting the Commission, Chief Chibuzo Ubochi, Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Europe and Coordinating Chairman of NIDO Worldwide, described Dabiri Erewa as “Mama Diaspora.”

He praised her for her inclusive approach and urged Nigerians at home and abroad to embrace unity rather than division.

Dabiri Erewa herself stressed that ethnic prejudice is a destructive burden, warning against politicizing identity issues. “It is time to elevate our discourse, reject division, and set an example that leaves our children a united Nigeria.

We are proud Nigerians, at home and abroad, with a duty to work with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build a united and prosperous nation,” she said.

The Commission further emphasized that while Nigerians who commit crimes abroad face justice regardless of their origin, the achievements of law-abiding citizens remain celebrated.

NIDCOM reiterated that its mandate is inclusive and dedicated to the welfare of all Nigerians in the diaspora.
