The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has called on state governments to increase civil servants’ pay beyond the current ₦70,000 minimum wage.
According to Eko Hot Blog, the association argues that states no longer have an excuse for inaction, as rising federal revenues give them the resources to help citizens struggling with a worsening cost of living.

Speaking on Channels Television, NECA’s Director-General, Adewale Smatt-Oyerinde, said states should raise wages to improve workers’ productivity and motivation. He emphasized that civil servants are the “engine that drives the system” and that their well-being is critical for a state’s economic growth.
He also stressed that a worker who faces issues with food, shelter, and transportation cannot be productive at work.
The call from NECA comes as some states have already taken action. President Bola Tinubu signed the National Minimum Wage Act in July 2024, raising the national wage to ₦70,000.
Following this, both Imo and Ebonyi states announced increases, with Imo now paying ₦104,000 and Ebonyi paying ₦90,000 to all civil and public servants.
