Maryam reportedly tied the baby’s neck with pieces of wrapper, muffled her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave located in Malam Yaro bush.

The following day, June 26, a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, noticed disturbed soil on his farmland and, suspecting something unusual, raised an alarm. With help from nearby residents, the area was dug up and the infant was discovered alive.

The baby was immediately taken to General Hospital in Kamba, where doctors confirmed she was stable after receiving urgent medical care.

Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) apprehended the suspect, who later admitted to the act during questioning.

Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, condemned the incident, describing it as cruel and intolerable.

“We will not allow acts like this to go unpunished. No child deserves to suffer due to poverty or social pressure.”

He also praised the swift actions of Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad and acknowledged the support of the Governor’s wife, Hajiya Zainab Nasir Idris, in ensuring the baby’s welfare.

The suspect is expected to be charged to court soon, where she will face prosecution.
