Aggrieved residents of Akure staged a protest at the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) headquarters in Ondo State on Tuesday, demanding an end to the worsening power supply in their community.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the protesters, who were mostly from Judges Estate in the Alagbaka area, locked the entrance gate to the BEDC office.

The residents accused BEDC officials of deceiving them and rerouting their power supply. The Chairman of the Judges’ Estate Landlords Association, Prince Ade Adegboro, said the estate previously enjoyed about 16 hours of daily electricity.

However, he claimed that BEDC technicians diverted their power to a new line in Oda, which has an irregular supply and has left them in darkness for nearly a week.

Adegboro stated that he sent several letters of complaint to BEDC offices in Benin and Lagos, but they did not receive any positive response.

During the protest, officials at the Akure office refused to address the crowd and instead told the residents to send yet another formal letter with their grievances.
