“You Are Spinning A Web Of Deceit” – Presidency Cries Foul Over Obi’s GDP Statistics Comments

Presidency Peter Obi GDP Statistics

The Presidency criticized Peter Obi for his comments on Nigeria’s GDP, calling his statistics misleading and questioning his motives.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Presidency has criticized Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi for his comments on Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) statistics. Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, expressed concerns over the ongoing economic crisis, recalling that Nigeria had the largest economy in Africa in 2014.

EDITOR’S PICK

On his official account on X, Obi noted that the economy started to decline in 2015. He highlighted a significant contrast between Nigeria’s economic growth during its early post-democracy years and its current state.

Obi stated that from 1999 to 2014, Nigeria saw an average GDP growth rate of approximately 6.72%. However, this growth dropped to 2.79% in 2015, leading to an economic downturn in 2016.

In response, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, accused Obi of using misleading statistics and questioned his motives for reviewing the economy at this time.

Onanuga said Peter Obi aims to work up his mob plotting to destabilise the country from next week.

Dangote Powers Up Fuel Storage Capacity

Dangote Discloses Reasons for Delayed Petrol Production

Eko Hot Blog reports that Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has announced plans to expand his refinery’s storage capacity by 600 million liters, bringing the total to 5.3 billion liters.

The Dangote Petrochemical Refinery currently holds 4.78 billion liters for refined petroleum products.

Speaking at the Afreximbank Annual Meetings and AfriCaribbean Trade & Investment Forum in Nassau, The Bahamas, Dangote accused international oil companies of obstructing his project by refusing to sell crude oil to his refinery, fearing its success.

“Well, I knew that there would be a fight. But I didn’t know that the mafia in oil, they are stronger than the mafia in drugs. I can tell you that. Yes, it’s a fact,” he said.

When asked if his refinery would lower the petrol pump price, currently around N700 per liter, Dangote didn’t confirm but shared how diesel prices dropped significantly when his product entered the market.

“The issue of gasoline is certainly a different issue. That one is being dealt with by the government. But let me give you an example. In the diesel, which the industries, transporters and everybody consume; when we first started, it was N1,700, and the dollar conversion was about N1,200 then. Immediately when we started, within two weeks we brought down the price to N1,000.

“We took it from N1,700 to N1,200 and from N1,200 to N1,700, we have given more than 60 per cent drop in price. With the currency now back up to about N1,500 per dollar, the price is still below N1,200. That’s a big improvement, from N1,700 to N1,200. And the diesel is available, we are not living from hand to mouth anymore,” Dangote replied.

He noted the refinery would serve as a strategic reserve for Nigeria’s petroleum products, enhancing the country’s energy security.

EDITOR’S PICK:

“The country doesn’t have strategic reserves in terms of petrol, which is very dangerous. But in our plant now, when you came, we had only 4.78 billion litres of various tankage capacity. But right now we’re adding another 600 million. So effectively, as we go forward, the refinery will be the strategic reserve of the country in terms of petroleum products,” he noted.

Dangote explained that international oil companies blocked his access to crude, doubting the feasibility of his 650,000 barrels per day capacity refinery.

“In a system where, for 35 years, people are used to counting good money, and all of a sudden, they see that the days of counting that money have come to an end, you don’t expect them to pray for you. Of course, you expect them to fight back. And I think that is the process that we’re now really going through. But the truth is that, yes, the country, the sub-region, and also the continent, of sub-Saharan Africa, need this refinery. So, you expect them to fight through non-supply of crude, non-purchase of the product, but I think it’s all temporary. We’ll get there,” he added.

To operate his refinery, Dangote has been importing crude oil from the United States. He criticized the longstanding issue of Nigeria importing low-quality, high-sulfur fuel, which he linked to rising cancer rates in the country.

“It is high sulfur, very polluting and also when you look at it, especially in Nigeria, in the past few years, we’ve been having cases of cancer, and most of these cases of cancer have to do with the bad fuel that we’ve been using. So, I will advise even here, you should check the quality of what is being dumped in your region in The Caribbean.”

When asked about regulations to control the quality of imported fuel, Dangote stated, “Now there is regulation, so it is upon the regulators to enforce the regulation.”

Despite Nigeria’s vast crude oil reserves, the country heavily relies on imported refined fuel. However, Dangote recently assured that his refinery’s commencement would end Nigeria’s fuel importation.

He also revealed plans to supply cheaper fuel to the Caribbean, where petroleum product prices are high, by establishing a terminal to facilitate access to affordable energy.

“I don’t know the exact price but I know that the price in the Caribbean in terms of petroleum products is very high. So, we produce it cheaply, we can always bring it here, we can set up a terminal and we will be able to feed their needs. We have a bilateral agreement with them and bringing in stuff from there is not more than 18, 20 days maximum. Once we set up a terminal, they will have very cheap oil. They will have cheap energy. By having cheap energy, their economies will grow faster,” he maintained.

El-Rufai Claps Back At Kaduna Assembly Over Office Abuse Allegations

El-Rufai

Eko Hot Blog reports that Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has refuted claims of abuse of office and financial mismanagement levelled against his administration by the state house house of Assembly.

This follows the Assembly’s endorsement of a damning report by its ad-hoc committee that investigated the governance of the state from May 2015 to May 2023.

The committee’s report, presented on Wednesday, accused El-Rufai’s administration of mismanaging state finances, alleging improper loan use and failure to adhere to due process in contract awards.

El-Rufai
Kaduna State House Of Assembly

The Speaker, Yusuf Liman, claimed that actions under El-Rufai led to the misappropriation of N423 billion, significantly indebting the state.

In response, El-Rufai, through his spokesman Muyiwa Adekeye, defended his tenure, asserting that his administration operated with utmost integrity and competence.

Adekeye criticized the Assembly’s findings as “scandalous” and indicative of a targeted smear campaign rather than a genuine quest for accountability.

The report recommended that El-Rufai and several members of his cabinet be investigated and potentially prosecuted for alleged abuses of office, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.

Additionally, it called for the immediate suspension of the current Commissioner of Finance, Shizer Badda, who also served during El-Rufai’s term.

He said, “Malam Nasir El-Rufai is immensely proud of his record of governance and the legacy he left in Kaduna State. This record of consistently high performance in public and private office cannot be altered by any malicious effort to use the auspices of a state legislature for defamation and undeserved smears.

“Many of the officials who served in the El-Rufai government appeared before the ad-hoc committee because of their confidence in the quality of their service and the rectitude which they served Kaduna State. They were under no illusion that they were participating in a fair process. It was obvious that the ad hoc committee was merely going through the motions of an inquiry just to give some gloss to predetermined conclusions.

“It is sad to see such a shameful departure from any notion of decency and fairness by a state legislature. We dismiss with contempt the claims being peddled in connection with the report.

“Malam El-Rufai wishes to assure discerning Nigerians that he has served Kaduna State with integrity and to the best of his capacity, assisted by a hardworking and patriotic team. He complied with all extant laws in all his activities while he was the governor. This jaundiced probe should be disregarded as the politically motivated hatchet job it is.”

  • Hopes remain due to speculation about increased qualifying spots from potential CAF expansion
  • Former U-17 World Cup winner Festus Odini blamed the team’s struggles on lack of preparation.

Eko Hot Blog reports that The participation of Nigeria’s U-17 men’s team, the Golden Eaglets, in the 2025 U-17 AFCON, which doubles as qualifiers for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, is uncertain.

Editor’s Pick

This is because the Confederation of African Football has not finalized the allocation of slots for each zone in the zonal qualifiers.

The Golden Eaglets suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in the semi-finals of the WAFU B zone.

Extinguishing their hopes of advancing to the U-17 AFCON as one of the finalists in the zonal qualifiers.

Manu Garba’s team now relies on a slim chance of expansion by CAF, as the continent’s football governing body has yet to make a decision.

Eaglets vs Ivory coast

Initially, two teams were anticipated to qualify from each zonal qualifier organized by CAF.

However, many followers speculate a potential alteration in the number of teams for the U-17 AFCON.

Hence, possibly increasing from 16, especially after FIFA expanded the World Cup to 32 teams.

Following their defeat on Saturday in Accra, media officer of the team, Francis Achi noted:

“Lifeline for Golden Eaglets. It is likely that three teams will qualify from WAFU Zone B for the U-17 AFCON.

“There is still all to play for in the third-place game against Ghana.

“CAF will confirm in the coming days if three or four teams will qualify from WAFU B,” he added.

“There is a plan for everything in life because with God we have trust in him. We appreciate your support. All the boys are saying a big thanks for you guys support once again.

“We go again for the third place with Ghana. Your support will go a long way for the third place.”

He said further, “We believe in having a plan for everything in life, trusting in God along the way.

We deeply appreciate your support. The boys extend their heartfelt thanks for your ongoing encouragement.

“We’re gearing up for the third-place match against Ghana. Your support will mean a great deal in our quest for victory.”

Meanwhile, Festus Odini, a member of the 1993 U-17 World Cup-winning team, has attributed the Golden Eaglets’ failure to reach the final and the potential harm to age-grade football to insufficient preparation.

Golden Eaglets of Nigeria

“Everything is down to the schedule for the preparation.

“The team didn’t use up to a month together before the tournament and look at the issues of MRI they had too,” Odini told Punch correspondent.

“That is what is affecting us. There should be proper and adequate preparations for teams like this.

“I remember during our time, there were bunch of talents in camp for almost a year before some of us joined as additions.”

Ekiti: Time To Silence The Guns (1)

Ekiti and Osun governorship elections

By abiodun KOMOLAFE

Thank God Ekiti school children and their teachers who were kidnapped on Monday, January 29, 2024, have now been released and reunited with their families. May the ‘Land of Honour’ never witness such a horrible experience again!

EDITOR’S PICKS

Yours sincerely also join other well-meaning Nigerians to commiserate with those who lost loved ones to the two tragedies. May God repose the souls of the faithful departed and grant the bereaved families the courage to process their losses and the strength to face whatever lies ahead!

Most of all, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, aka BAO, deserves a pat on the back for taking steps that demonstrated the true essence of public service. No doubt about it, he, like any other governor in Nigeria, is under immense pressure and recent events in the country have not helped matters. But then, here’s a man who did not delegate responsibilities or send his deputy on an assessment tour of the terrible tragedies that had just rocked the state. Oyebanji did not attempt to insult God by asking Him to help put rice on fire after He had done His part of the provision. No, the governor did not resort to episodic strategies and dead laws that’d have further left the victims battered and bruised. Instead, he took charge! He led from the front!

Oyebanji took steps that clearly showed the remarkable empathy in his public persona, which mattered to the people. He gave a comforting ‘state of the state’ broadcast, visited the affected communities and representatives of the traditional rulers to reassure them of his administration’s strong resolve to deal neatly, meticulously and decisively with the scent of frustration, confusion and a piece of complex puzzle trying to overwhelm the state. He met with Nigeria’s military chiefs and the Inspector General of Police on the security situation in the state, and this led to a promise to assist Ekiti securitywise. The governor did even more, and the results showed!

Bold steps! Encouraging results! From what Nigerians have seen in the past few days, Oyebanji is a governor any state worth its purpose will want to have! But again, how did we get to this sorry pass and what next?

The current dilemma again reminds one of a time in Nigeria’s recent history when the social media platforms were flooded with videos of young men who, in their thousands, were reportedly undergoing paramilitary training in insurgency in selected camps. Unfortunately, the principalities and powers at the time watched helplessly as some witches and wizards acted recklessly. With the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) as the culprits, Nigerians are now living with the consequences.

When Gani Adams cried out that Fulani herdsmen’s invasion of the forest reserves in Yorubaland was a taboo and an embarrassment that should not be tolerated, our leaders and elders either didn’t have the nerve to speak truth to power or made political fortunes out of the bad situation. Now, the chickens have come home to roost and here we are, crying over spilled milk!

When Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho, attempted to lead a response to the criminal herdsmen who had invaded Yorubaland, some Nigerians gave him a bad name. The feeling then was that Igboho was just an impenitent irritant in the hunt for undue attention. With the help of some powerful forces, the activist was thrown out of the country and was detained in a foreign land. Safe for providence, the story would have been pathetically different. Now, here we are, licking our wounds!

Truly, the upsurge in the killings and abductions is not new; and it’s not that the tendencies also assumed office with the Bola Tinubu-led government. However, it is no longer news that things are taking turns for the worse in Nigeria. Kidnappings for ransom are fast becoming an industry to the level of the hunter becoming the hunted. In the days of old, whenever anything was stolen, the oracle would be consulted to help catch the thieves. Now, thieves have stolen the oracle. So, who are we going to consult? Here, everything seems to be failing and falling. Abuja, Nigeria’s administrative and political capital is no longer safe while Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub is fast becoming a dangerous terrain for commerce to thrive. Even police and military formations are no longer secure, and one begins to ask if the proverbial security dogs have not begun eating up their owners’ children.

When former President Muhammadu Buhari came, Nigerians were deceived into believing that he’s got body language. Of course, that horrid legacy worked for some time, until Nigerians woke up from their slumber only to discover that body language as a pill has an expiry date. One major challenge with the present government is that it doesn’t even seem to have a body language; and that’s unfortunate.

During his time as British Prime Minister, a wall collapsed at a secondary school in Manchester while Tony Blair was attending a Tax Conference in Brussels. Even with no recorded fatality, Blair handed the affairs of the British government at the Conference over to his Foreign Secretary and flew back to Manchester to side with the victims of the wall collapse. In 2016, following multiple police shootings in Dallas, former President Barack Obama not only visited the families of the five deceased officers but also attended an interfaith memorial service in their honour. Well, I hope to come back to that later.

Going back in time, previous governments would have tamed the insecurity monster if only they had the sincerity of purpose and the will to go to its root causes as most professionally and honestly as possible. But that never happened, due to what only the handlers of Nigeria could explain. In terms of security, no one knows where Nigeria is presently headed. In our very eyes, kidnapping has become a major business in the country but unfortunately, the system has failed in the most elementary detective form to follow the money paid as ransom.

The fear and the authority of a policeman command social order. The fear and the command of a soldier brings more powerful social control on the society, simply because he represents not just the government but also confirms the authoritative use of force being exclusive to the state. Nevertheless, insecurity has a way of getting a life of its own. For instance, nobody can have a pattern at Budapest in Hungary and Bukkuyum in Zamfara State. So, we need to do a study of an environment vis-à-vis its historical environmental antecedents in order to initiate security measures.

FURTHER READING

Why have successive governments’ investments in security not justified by tangible results and reduction in the violent criminal waves? Yes, previous governments shied away from going the full hog because of political, humanitarian and regional considerations but where has that left us as a country and people? Why do Nigerians seem to have lost confidence in almost all the institutions: police, army, academics, banking, judiciary, tradition, religion, just name it? Why have they been clamouring for restructuring or a return to the 1963 Constitution which gave room for each region to stand alone and develop at its own pace but bring something to the centre?

Why are those in charge at the top not making use of intelligence adequately and why are the masses running the race by being forgotten? Why are security agencies failing in infiltration tactics, intelligence gathering, proactive sting operations and covert operational planning which could help in destroying terrorist camps from within? Sincerely, doesn’t the present situation call for a revisit to the widely anticipated re-organization of the first responder law enforcement agency in Nigeria – the Nigeria Police?

Don’t Cry More Than The Bereaved, Police Spokesperson Attacks Nigerians Seeking Rescue Of Abducted Girls

Police PRO, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi
  • Adejobi has been accused of lacking emotional intelligence and being bad at his job.
  • Some have called for the sack of the police spokesperson.
  • Some of his comments on the kidnapping of the six siblings have lacked empathy.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Nigerians on X, formerly known as Twitter, have been left in shock after the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, attacked people seeking the rescue of five abducted girls.

Adejobi made the attacks on Sunday via his X account.

The police spokesperson’s attacks came in the wake of the abduction of six young girls in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The kidnappers reportedly sought ₦60 million ransom for the release of the girls.

They allegedly killed one of the victims identified as Najeeba Al-Kadriyar after their family missed the payment deadline.

In an attempt to secure the release of the remaining five siblings, the family resorted to crowdfunding which triggered anger on social media as users questioned the role of the police in the situation.

However, the police spokesperson attacked Nigerians who sought explanation from the force.

ACP Adejobi said the families of the victims should reach out to him on his personal line  “codedly” without saying whether the police had reached out as expected. It wasn’t clear what he meant by “codedly”.

He was responding to a plea by a former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, to safely rescue the remaining victims.

“I join fellow concerned Nigerians in urgently calling on the @PoliceNG through its PPRO @PrinceMoye1 to acknowledge and respond to the unfortunate incident involving the kidnapping of Najeebah and five of her sisters #NajeebahAndHerSisters more than a week ago,” Ahmad wrote.

“We implore the Nigeria Police to prioritize this case and deploy all necessary resources to safely rescue the remaining victims.”

The assistant commissioner of police replied, saying that, “Pls let the family members or you relate with us codedly. Let them reach out to me on my personal line, and drop a msg there. We have been working on it, but we need some info. We will try our best possible to emplace all necessary measures to rescue them unhurt. But we need to get some info pls. Thanks.”

However, Adejobi did not stop there. Instead of addressing the issues, he attacked an X user, Oluwasegun Adeoye, for saying he is subject to public scrutiny and criticisms because he is paid by taxpayers.

The police spokesperson rather accused Adeoye and his family of tax evasion without evidence.

“Has anyone around you paid for tax bef…. ?? Ask them at home. This is how we know those who are into tax evasion.. they always shout, tax, tax, and tax.. so always pay tax and encourage others to pay, then you sound better,” he said.

Adejobi also attacked another X user identified as Jay B for asking the police spokesperson to reach out to the family instead of expecting them to contact him first.

The police officer asked the X user not to cry more than the bereaved.

“Don’t cry more than the bereaved . Ok,” the Nigerian police spokesperson wrote on social media.

The unhinged police spokesperson attacked another X user identified as Odunfa for criticising him, accusing him of being part of Nigeria’s “security problems” with no proof. He didn’t say how Odunfa contributed to the country’s insecurity.

“Are you not part of the security problems in Nigeria? Ask yourself before you claim holiness on social media. He who preaches equity must come with clean hands,” Adejobi wrote.

The tweets generated intense outrage among Nigerians who accused him of lacking empathy and the emotional intelligence to speak for the Nigeria Police Force.

Some Nigerians further called for Adejobi’s sack, accusing him of being unprofessional in discharging his duties.

Thousands Of Protesters Storm National Assembly, Seek Wike’s Resignation

Eko Hot Blog reports that the thousands of Abuja natives and members of civil society groups gathered in a large protest at the National Assembly complex, demanding the resignation of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The protesters criticized Wike’s leadership, labeling it as incompetent and lacking vision for the development of the Federal Capital Territory.

Adamu Kabir Matazu, speaking on behalf of the protesters and representing the Network of Civil Societies for Economic Sustainability, urged for an investigation into Wike’s land allocation policies in the FCT.

He said, “We stand united to express our concern over the direction of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the watch of Nyesom Wike. It’s abysmal and disturbing for the FCT to become an epicentre of controversy due to the misguided actions of Wike, which not only undermine President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda but also cast a shadow on the credibility of the federal government.

“We are here today to demand the immediate resignation, investigation and prosecution of Nyesom Wike as Minister of the FCT due to his inefficiency in a government that promises to renew the Hope of Nigerians.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike

A government that wishes to give hope to its citizens must be run by men who possess required qualities of a leader.

“Wike has remained inefficient in the discharge of his duties and has failed to live up to the vision of the administration of President Bola Tinubu and should therefore be sacked from office. While the Federal Government has been calm and calculated in its reforms and its explanations to citizens on the rationale behind the policies of government, Wike has been insensitive; insulting the collective sensibilities of residents of the Federal Capital and Nigerians in general.

“Many residents are of the views that the land reforms being carried iut by Wike are suspected to be targeted at dispossessing Nigerians of their properties.

“His high-handedness in land policies, the revocation of lands, perceived animosity towards a particular section of the country, and the alarming manner in which lands are allocated, is suspicious. His actions do not align with the government’s agenda for reforms and development in the FCT. Mr. Wike’s tactics, reminiscent of an emperor which he exhibited during his tenure as governor of Rivers State are detrimental to the progress and growth we seek for our FCT and the nation at large.”

The Network of Civil Society for Economic Sustainability, therefore, called on Tinubu to take decisive action to contain the excesses of Wike.
