Former Anambra Governor Peter Obi has called on Nigerian leaders to lead by example and prioritize taking their holidays within the country, rather than abroad.

Speaking after the Domestic Tourism Conference in Enugu State, Obi took to his X handle to stress that tourism remains a massive, untapped source of foreign exchange for Nigeria, Eko Hot Blog reports.

Obi referenced Turkey as a model for success, noting that the country’s tourism sector generated over $61 billion in 2024, attracting over 62 million visitors.

He argued that if Nigeria could achieve even a third of Turkey’s numbers, it could generate more than $20 billion in revenue and create millions of jobs.

He pointed out that Nigeria currently attracts less than 10 per cent of Turkey’s visitor count.

Obi emphasized that a lack of leadership, vision, and commitment prevents Nigeria from becoming a global tourism destination. He challenged Nigerian leaders to take holidays in beautiful regions like Zamfara, Cross River, Kebbi, Yobe, or Plateau.

He concluded by stating, “Nigeria is beautiful and our leaders must start showcasing Nigeria’s beauty to the world,” underscoring the need for a national effort to unlock the country’s immense tourism potential.
