“It was a moment full of tension and frustration. Something happened right after the final whistle that shouldn’t have, but that doesn’t excuse the way I reacted,” he said.

The game, which saw the star-studded Inter Miami team led by Lionel Messi – fall to a dominant Seattle side, ended in drama when Suarez ran towards 20-year-old midfielder Obed Vargas and appeared to put him in a headlock.

The clash quickly escalated, involving several players and staff members from both teams.

While the referees and officials rushed to control the situation, footage showed Suarez spitting in the direction of a Seattle security personnel as he walked away from the fracas.

In his apology, Suarez expressed regret for his behaviour.

“I feel very sorry for what happened and I didn’t want to ignore it. I sincerely apologise to anyone who felt offended by what I did,” he said.

The incident has drawn criticism, with many waiting to see what disciplinary actions will follow in the joint MLS and Liga MX tournament.

Despite the controversy, Suarez remains focused on the remainder of the MLS season.

“There’s still a long way to go in the league, and I’m committed to helping the team achieve success for the club and the fans,” he added.
