- Governor Zulum launches free meals and ₦300,000 aid for parents of pupils in Magumeri.
- Initiative targets only 90 students in a town of 50,000 residents.
- Part of a wider plan establishing 20 Islamic colleges across Borno.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved free daily meals for pupils and financial support of ₦300,000 to their parents in Magumeri Local Government Area.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the initiative directly targets 90 pupils, the total number enrolled in Magumeri despite its population of about 50,000. Zulum described the low figures as troubling, saying education in the area has been weakened by years of insurgency, poverty, and parental reluctance.

Under the plan, each father will receive ₦250,000 while mothers get ₦50,000. In addition, every pupil will be given ₦50,000 along with one guaranteed free meal daily. The governor said the support is meant to ease the burden on families while ensuring that children not only enroll but also stay in school.

Zulum announced the programme while inaugurating the Higher Islamic College in Gajiganna. He explained that the school is part of a network of 20 similar colleges already established in the state. These institutions, he said, are designed to integrate Islamic education with modern literacy, science, mathematics, and technology, alongside vocational training. Their curriculum is approved by the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS).
The governor stressed that Borno cannot rebuild its future without addressing the gaps in education, particularly in rural and insurgency-affected communities. He noted that without bold incentives, many families would continue to keep their children out of formal schooling.
Observers see the initiative as a pilot scheme that, if successful, could be expanded to other parts of Borno where enrollment is equally low. By combining financial support, food security, and education, the state hopes to win over parents and strengthen the schooling system.
The programme reflects Zulum’s broader vision of tackling both poverty and illiteracy while offering children in conflict-affected areas a pathway to better opportunities.
