The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Africa has made a strong appeal for national unity, urging major socio-cultural groups in Nigeria, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Oodua Peoples Congress, and the Arewa Consultative Forum, to rise above tribal politics and join forces in the fight against human trafficking and other deep-rooted societal challenges.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Professor Jude Osakwe the Continental Chairman of NIDO Africa, delivered the message in Abuja, stressing the urgent need for a united front to tackle these complex issues.

He cautioned that tribal politics and personal attacks remain obstacles to national progress. “Playing tribal politics will not help us. Targeting individuals to score political points will not help us,” he warned, calling for a shift toward collective national interest.

He revealed that more than 1,500 Nigerians have been rescued in Ghana and other African countries through joint efforts, but emphasized that the scale of the problem demands broader cooperation. “We need more hands.

We should not leave the fight to government alone,” Osakwe said, noting that state actors cannot successfully handle the multifaceted problem of human trafficking without support.

Highlighting positive examples, Professor Osakwe praised Dr Abike Dabiri Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), for her unwavering commitment and responsiveness that cut across ethnic and political lines.

“Anytime we rescue victims, she was always there to assist. We got used to calling on her because her commission is always responsive to our calls,” he stated.

He underscored Dr Dabiri Erewa’s humanitarian work, pointing out that her dedication goes beyond political and regional divides, setting an example of true leadership in Nigeria’s fight against human trafficking.

He added that her consistent support has made NiDCOM the first point of call for diaspora groups in times of crisis, unlike other agencies that have been less reliable.

Osakwe urged other socio-cultural groups to emulate her nonpartisan approach, stressing that in a time of divisive politics, her style of leadership shows how service to the nation should transcend ethnic and political loyalties.

He expressed concern that some individuals who once commended her work are now turning against her for political reasons. “It is surprising and disappointing that the same people who praised her tremendous work for Nigerians in the diaspora are now the ones criticizing her,” he lamented.

According to him, such political maneuvers only highlight the destructive tendencies NIDO Africa continues to warn against.

He maintained that Dr Dabiri Erewa’s track record in rescuing Nigerians abroad should not be downplayed for political gain, as her dedication reflects the type of leadership Nigeria urgently needs.

Professor Osakwe concluded by stressing that human trafficking affects Nigerians everywhere, regardless of tribe or background, and therefore requires a united, nationwide response.

NIDO Africa’s call is a reminder that solving critical issues like human trafficking demands collective responsibility that goes beyond politics and ethnicity for the sake of the nation’s future.
