The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has assured passengers that the suspended Port Harcourt–Aba train service will soon resume operations.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the suspension followed a viral social media video showing stranded passengers trekking long distances and crossing a stream to find alternative transportation after a train broke down at Imo River around 4:22 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3.

According to the corporation, the train, which was traveling from Aba (Abia State) to Port Harcourt (Rivers State), developed an unusual fault and could not be revived despite engineers’ efforts. An alternative engine, Loco 2306, was quickly deployed to rescue the stranded train.

The NRC explained that while some passengers sought alternative means to continue their journey, others were safely returned.

The faulty train has since been taken back to Port Harcourt for comprehensive repairs in line with the corporation’s quality control standards.

The corporation urged affected passengers to present proof of payment at its Port Harcourt or Aba stations for possible refunds or replacement rides.

Reaffirming its commitment to improving services, the NRC said it remained aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the ongoing rail revitalisation programme.
