He warned that if 25 percent of the Nigerian population suffers from various eye defects, the impact could weaken the nation’s economy, as the condition limits the productivity of those affected.

Adelanwa, who is also the founder of Ade Ti De Development Initiative, a nongovernmental organization, stressed the need for government at all levels to put basic measures in place to address the challenge.

“If we look at the rate of people living with eye problems in Nigeria, it is about 25 percent, or 23 million people, who are battling one form of eye condition or another,” he said.

Also speaking at the outreach, Lead Optometrist Dr. Richard Ojeme explained that refractive errors and glaucoma remain the leading causes of visual impairment.

He pointed out that 77.9 percent of mild vision impairment and other sight related challenges are prevalent among Nigerians, referencing the World Health Organization’s 2040 agenda to eradicate avoidable blindness.

Ojeme further disclosed that the outreach aimed to treat 1,000 patients. So far, over 600 have been attended to, 500 medical eyeglasses have been distributed, drugs have been given to those in need, and the NGO has pledged to sponsor surgeries for 50 patients.

One of the beneficiaries, Adebayo Adedeji, praised the initiative for its timely support in tackling eye challenges, especially at a time when many find it difficult to afford healthcare.
