Popular Nollywood actress Wumi Toriola has been hospitalised after suffering a breakdown triggered by a wave of online criticism following her clash with veteran actor and director Afeez Owo.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the controversy began after Owo, who is married to actress Mide Martins, suggested in an interview that Toriola’s on-screen roles reflect her real-life character. According to him, she tends to be quick-tempered, an opinion that many fans repeated online. Toriola, visibly upset, took to social media to call him out, a move that sparked harsh reactions from fans and colleagues.

In the post, she wrote: “Internet dragging and ICU are siblings,” hinting that the weight of the criticism had taken a toll on her health. She added that she had learned from the experience and promised to handle such matters differently in the future.
The backlash became so intense that Toriola eventually apologised to Owo and her fans. “I accept my fault and I will do better next time,” she wrote, urging her supporters to pray for her quick recovery. Despite her apology, social media remains divided, with some critics saying she overreacted while others blame the cyber-bullying culture that often escalates celebrity disputes.
The incident has also reignited conversations around the mental health of entertainers in Nigeria. Experts warn that online harassment and negative publicity can cause real harm, leading to depression, anxiety, or even hospitalisation.
