A recent survey of 50 members of the House of Representatives has named Speaker Tajudeen Abbas the most loved presiding officer in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the survey—covering an equal mix of returning and first-term lawmakers—highlighted Abbas’s inclusive, accessible, and reform-driven leadership style. Many respondents said he treats all members as equal stakeholders and actively builds consensus across party lines.

Several first-term lawmakers expressed relief and admiration, noting they expected to be sidelined but were pleasantly surprised by Abbas’s openness. “He reaches out, he listens, and he makes us feel like equal stakeholders,” one said. Returning members described him as respectful and collaborative, setting him apart from previous holders of the office.

Speaker Abbas with tangible improvements in legislative output: the current House has moved more motions and passed more bills in two years than past assemblies. Importantly, Abbas has upgraded the working environment through reforms led by the House Committee on House Services, installing Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and better facilities in lawmakers’ offices.
While most responses were positive, a few voices called for a more confrontational style toward the executive. A minority from opposition ranks said they respected Abbas but wished he would challenge the executive branch more assertively.
Overall, the survey reveals a rare affection in political circles—but one rooted in respect, fairness, and leadership that visibly elevates both process and morale. As one lawmaker succinctly put it: “Love is not a word often used in politics, but in this House, it is the best way to describe how members feel about Speaker Abbas.”
