  • Emergency evacuations for women and children underway

Overnight flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has submerged seven communities in Lau Local Government Area, Taraba State, displacing hundreds of residents and destroying farms and homes.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the worst-hit area is Kunini, where entire farmlands and residential buildings were inundated. Locals described it as an “unprecedented” deluge, with properties worth millions of naira washed away and scores of livestock swept off by rising waters. State officials confirm emergency evacuation efforts are in progress, prioritizing women and children.

Peter Julius, the state’s Commissioner for Urban and Rural Development and a native of one of the impacted communities, lamented the scale of destruction. He revealed that many residents ignored earlier warnings to relocate to safer ground, staying put until it was too late. Homes and crops lying too close to the River Benue bore the brunt of the flooding.

Yohana Kwana, a community leader in Kunini, stood in shock at the sight of submerged buildings and fields. The flood comes just a week after similar scenes unfolded in Gassol and Karim-Lamido LGAs, painting a broader picture of escalating climatic threats along the River Benue’s banks.

Earlier alerts from the Taraba State Ministry of Environment had urged residents to move before the rains, but many stayed. Authorities now face mounting pressure to improve early warnings and expand evacuation strategies. As floodwaters continue their advance, concern grows for other riverine villages in Gassol and Ibi LGAs, which remain on high alert.

This calamity highlights the profound vulnerability of farming communities to climate swings—and the urgent need for stronger resilience and infrastructure.
