Nigerian soldiers have killed a suspected bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle during a midnight ambush in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Eko Hot Blog reports that troops from the 22 Armoured Brigade, operating under the Forward Operating Base in Patigi, acted on intelligence suggesting armed criminals were moving through the Lema–Daban Lema Road on Wednesday night. The soldiers set up an ambush around 12:10 a.m., engaging the suspects in a brief gun duel. One bandit was neutralised, while others fled into nearby bushes.

According to Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, the operation led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, and a motorcycle believed to have been used by the bandits. He confirmed that the body of the neutralised suspect had been handed over to relevant authorities for further action.

Brigadier-General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, commended the soldiers for their swift response and professionalism. He praised their resilience and urged them to sustain pressure on criminal groups threatening peace in Kwara and neighbouring states. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety of our people. This success is a result of vigilance, courage, and the strong cooperation between troops and local communities,” he said.

Residents of Edu LGA, who have been living under the shadow of increasing bandit attacks in recent months, welcomed the development. Some locals described the ambush as “timely,” noting that criminals had been using remote routes to terrorise rural dwellers and disrupt farming activities.

The operation is part of ongoing military campaigns aimed at dismantling bandit networks across the North-Central region. Military sources stressed that more patrols and surveillance missions are being intensified to block escape routes and recover additional weapons.

With the army’s renewed determination, communities in Kwara are hopeful that sustained operations will restore lasting peace and stability to the area.
