The House of Representatives has given the Minister of Transportation 48 hours to appear and explain the recent derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train.
According to a report by Eko Hot Blog, the summon came after strong reactions from the public and mounting pressure on lawmakers to take swift action. The online news outlet pointed out that Nigerians are becoming increasingly frustrated with the state of rail infrastructure and the lack of accountability when such incidents occur.

The derailment, which happened last week, has once again drawn attention to the Abuja-Kaduna rail line, a critical route that has seen repeated mishaps in recent years.
Lawmakers say the incident cannot be overlooked, especially considering the safety risks and the large number of passengers who rely on the service daily.
In a statement, the House expressed serious concern over what it called “recurring rail accidents,” and demanded a detailed explanation from the Minister regarding the cause, emergency response, and preventive measures in place. The 48-hour deadline, they stressed, is not negotiable.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has set up an incident response desk to assist affected passengers and respond to public inquiries. Officials from the NRC confirmed that efforts are ongoing to trace all passengers who were on board during the derailment and to offer necessary support.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has also launched a formal investigation into the cause of the accident. The agency says it will release a preliminary report within 23 days, promising a transparent process that would help prevent future incidents.
This latest derailment has triggered renewed calls for better maintenance of rail lines and stricter monitoring of safety procedures. While investigations are ongoing, public attention remains fixed on the government’s response and the outcome of the minister’s expected appearance before lawmakers.
