Security around the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) zonal office in Kano was significantly heightened on Thursday as civil society organizations mounted a peaceful protest to back ongoing investigations into alleged corruption by state officials.
Eko Hot Blog reports that members of the Forum of Kano Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption assembled outside the EFCC office to voice their support for the anti-graft agencies and to demand accountability, justice, and transparency in governance. The groups urged institutions like the EFCC and ICPC to remain steadfast in their probe into multiple scandals, including the ₦6.5 billion disbursement issue, the Novomed drug procurement controversy, the ₦50,000 women’s cash support scheme, and alleged palliative mismanagement.

At a press briefing, their leader Ambassador Abdullahi Muhammad emphasized the motivation behind the protest: “This solidarity walk sends a clear message—our call is for integrity in governance, not intimidation.” He added, “Corruption is killing Kano. Public trust has been betrayed, billions siphoned, and the people continue to suffer as a few enrich themselves.

The protesters didn’t stop at moral support for investigators; they also demanded broader institutional reforms. Their demands included a fair and uncompromised judiciary, and an immediate probe committee set up by the State House of Assembly to examine the allegations against local officials. They decried attempts to silence dissenting voices, noting that “silencing dissent is an assault on democracy.
The staged demonstration remained peaceful, reflecting a growing civic boldness in Northern Nigeria’s civil society. Authorities, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of preserving public order, coordinating police presence to ensure protests did not escalate.
As the rally concludes, the appeal is clear: an engaged civil society continues pressing for accountability, insisting that transparency and dignity are not optional but fundamental to good governance.
