Super Eagles Fight Back to Snatch Draw in South Africa

  • Troost-Ekong scored an unfortunate own goal to give South Africa the lead.
  • Super Eagles Calvin Bassey’s header secured a vital equaliser before half-time.
  • Nigeria made tactical changes but couldn’t break the deadlock in the second half.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a World Cup qualifier played on Tuesday evening at the Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the South Africans came out strong from the kickoff, pressing high and trying to make their home support count.

EDITOR’S PICK

Nigeria found some early rhythm with their first corner in the 10th minute after Ademola Lookman whipped in a dangerous cross, but South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was alert and punched clear.

The breakthrough came for the home side in the 25th minute when Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net following sustained pressure from the Bafana Bafana front line.

Nigeria responded well and got their equaliser just before the break. Calvin Bassey rose high to meet a cross and headed home a goal that sparked brief protest from the hosts, but the referee stood by the decision.

Second Half: Nigeria Pushes, South Africa Holds

In a bid to sharpen the attack, Nigeria introduced Tolu Arokodare and Bruno Onyemaechi at the start of the second half.

Arokodare made an instant impression, cutting in from the left and unleashing a shot that narrowly missed the target.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru also came close, forcing a strong block from the South African defence after a well-taken shot from outside the box.

Despite Nigeria dominating the second half, the hosts defended doggedly and managed to hold on for a point.
